- When Marvel hits on something popular it tries to milk it for all its got. Thus you have twenty million Thanos offshoots. Marvel Universe The End was one such endeavor.
It features Thanos as the narrator of a tale involving the coming of Pharaoh Akhenaten who intends to take over the Earth. This if foreshadowed by several powerful beings getting a premonition of the pharaoh’s return starting with Thanos, then Jean Grey and Professor Xavier, and finally Adam Warlock. The Pharaoh then makes an appearance in Asgard to warn Thor of his plans and to tell the Thunder God to stay out.
As has happened since the 1970s (The Kree-Skrull War in the Avengers comics from that decade was the first time Marvel tried this plot and has used it ever since) Earth’s heroes and some galactic beings come to meet this new threat.
There is a little twist this time. The all powerful villain shows some ruthlessness and uses his strengths and wipes out the X-Men, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four in a quick flash eliminating most of his opposition. Most times the foe gets into hand to hand combat with Marvel’s bests despite having far more strength. That leaves Thanos and the Defenders and Doctor Doom to be the pharaoh’s main opponents. Unfortunately writer Jim Stirlin can’t escape the trope and has all of Earth’s heroes attacking Thanos later on.
While there’s an interesting ending the collection overall turns out to be very conventional Marvel. - I haven't read comic books since my grade school days 30, 40 yrs ago, so I considered myself very lucky to have stumbled upon this series. Great story, good artwork--wonderfully crafted.
